Next: An Improved Method for Identifying Impacts in Regression Discontinuity Designs I. Introduction and Literature Review Regression discontinuity (RD) designs have become a very popular method for identifying the local average treatment effect of a program. In many policy contexts, estimating. Using a regression discontinuity design, we find that the net effect of these programs was to substantially increase academic achievement among third graders, but not sixth graders. In addition, contrary to conventional wisdom and prior research, we find that retention increases. the cutoff utilized in the regression discontinuity research design without imposing assumptions about the functional form of the relationship between the assignment criterion and student outcomes. Moreover, the impacts of specific remediation strategies on a variety of student outcomes have not been directly tested. The Impact of Postsecondary Remediation Using a Regression Discontinuity Approach: Addressing Endogenous Sorting and Noncompliance By Juan Carlos Calcagno & Bridget Terry Long This NCPR working paper reports findings from a study that used a detailed dataset and a regression discontinuity design to identify the causal effect of remediation on Cited by: Regression discontinuity (RD) analysis is a rigorous nonexperimental1 approach that can be used to estimate program impacts in situations in which candidates are selected for treatment based on whether their value for a numeric rating exceeds a designated threshold or cut-point.

Each year, thousands of American students enter postsecondary institutions unprepared for college-level work and are subsequently placed in remedial or developmental courses. Several recent studies have examined the impact of these courses on student outcomes, but such studies focus exclusively on students who need just one or two classes; the impact of remediation on students with more severe Cited by: we examine the effects of remediation on a wider range of students than previously analyzed.

Using regression discontinuity (RD) techniques, we provide causal estimates of the effects of placement on a number of student outcomes, including persistence, degree completion, the number of total and college-level credits completed, and college GPA.

Regression discontinuity is, in short, when assignment to a development program is made based on some sort of score (e.g., a poverty score or a test score), and we compare the people immediately above and below the score to each other, since they should be very similar except for (a) a few points on a test score and (b) some people received the.

The regression discontinuity design limits the chances of studying the impact of this policy on students who score far below the remediation cutoff in the placement test, and, as such, might be more at risk of failing in the remedial exam.

In recent years, the regression discontinuity design (RDD) has gained widespread recognition as a quasi-experimental method that, when used correctly, can produce internally valid estimates of causal effects of a treatment, a program, or an intervention (Cook, Shadish, and Wong.
